Barcelona is a safe city as a general rule, but as in all major cities of the world, there are certain situations to watch out for and avoid. Here are a few tips to make sure you don’t have any problematic experiences while you are staying with us.
- Pick pockets and scam merchants often work in groups and move very quickly - if a group of people comes to you attempting to gain your attention, turn your back and walk away.
- Only carry around the money you need for that day. If you carry a backpack, wear it with the bag in front of you so that no one has easy access to the pack.
- If you carry a bag its strap should go diagonally over your neck and shoulder, so that it goes under your arm.
Keep the bag in front of you - choose a small ordinary day bag with a zip fastener top. For additional security, zip your jacket or sweater over the bag.
- If you need to look up anything on a map go into a cafe and sit down rather than look up your destination in the street. This will mark you as a tourist and potential target.
- In Cafes and restaurants pay attention to your valuables. If you can't keep them in sight, wrap the bag strap around your leg and keep it under the table.
- Emulate the dress code of the Catalans - try to blend with the locals and take the opportunity to go shopping for the world-renowned Spanish fashion.
- Avoid walking in dark isolated streets, especially if you are alone.
When visiting the beach, do not leave your belongings unattended.
- At stations, people are often vulnerable because they are juggling their wallet, tickets, and other items. Keep your tickets separate and your passport easily available and safe.
- Take out a travel insurance policy. In the case that you are robbed, make sure you meet with the police and fill out a statement – your travel insurance is often void without this step. Make sure you read your policy carefully so you know exactly what you need to do.
This police report can be made by phone (Tel. 902 102 112) in various languages 24 hours a day or on the Police website (click on DENUNCIAS).
There is a Police Station in Carrer Nou de la Rambla 80 (near La Rambla - Metro Paral.lel)
The Main Station dealing with tourists is at Via Laietana 43 - Tel. 932 903 327
