2BR refined ethnic style in Eixample - Livingstone

 Dr. Livingstone, I presume?

“Under the mango tree which then stood here, Henry M. Stanley met David Livingstone, 10 November 1871.”- Plaque at the Livingstone Memorial Monument in Ujiji at Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania.

Welcome to our Livingstone apartment, a rest for senses and a gift for the brave.

It was well over a century ago that Stanley gave the famous greeting: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” Outside Tanzania, likely very few would understand the significance of this encounter.

the Building
  • • located on the 6th floor of a new glass building with a lift/elevator
  • • the address is C/ Urgell with C/ Sepúlveda, in the modernist Eixample left, next to Sant Antoni market
  • • reinforced entrance door & video intercom system, double door in the access to the building
  • • inside the building there is a big atrium with a glass ceiling, crossed by suspended bridges leading to your door
  • • groups of bamboo trees and whitee stones, are bathed by natural light cascades, creating a fresh, shining atmosphere
  • • glass, steel, stone and wood are the materials used for the building

Stanley relates what happened next: “The expedition at last comes to a halt... There is a group of the most respectable Arabs; and as I come nearer, I see the white face of an old man among them... We raise our hats, and I say, ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?’ and he says, ‘Yes.’”

the Area

Located in the Eixample left district of Barcelona, next to the Sant Antoni marketplace -designed by Antoni Rovira i Trias and built between 1872 and 1882- which is one of the oldest and most popular in the city, especially with the secondhand book stalls that surround the building on Sunday mornings.

It is bordered by the avenues of Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Ronda de Sant Antoni and Avinguda del Paral.lel. The streets of Sant Antoni follow the grid pattern prevalent in all of Eixample, except for a central thoroughfare, the Avinguda de Mistral, built on the site of an important medieval road which lead out of Barcelona. Another well-known landmark of Sant Antoni is the bar called Els Tres Tombs, right next to the market.

Just a few meters away is Parlament sreet, the new happening cluster, a boiling pot where the utmost interesting things are arising. It all started with the Federal Café, which opened at the end of 2010 and reached almost legendary status, as among the most brilliant entrepreneurs in town. In their case, they spotted a gap for breakfast and brunch in Barcelona, and these days securing a seat either in the café or on the roof terrace on a Saturday or Sunday is nigh-on impossible.

Those who had been paying attention soon followed. Vinito, the little wine shop that has been there considerably longer than Federal, expanded on their two barrels outside where you could sip a glass while you shopped and it’s become a popular spot for a crafty apero when out shopping. Next door, Bar Calders commandeered a prime piece of terrace on the alleyway, added a few pretty plants and hey presto, it’s the spot du jour for a Sunday morning vermouth or a craft beer in the evening with a couple of tapas like hummus and guacamole.

Tarannà Bar & Café opened later, with a style very similar to Federal. Their windows also open onto the street so you can sit in them, they have large communal tables, single-plate simple lunches like fresh pasta stuffed with botifarra and a solid wine list.

And another new place, the Zuckerhaus opened selling old-fashioned, home-baked cakes from a pretty cake shop on the corner. Manuela is half German, half Italian and to the usual round-up of treats has added black forest gateaux, fresh plum frangipane tart and pumpkin and apple cake. This is the perfect place for an afternoon pick-me-up.

The Livingstone apartment is our tribute to explorers... which is what all of us are, at the end of the day...

The place to stay in Barcelona

Great apartment in an ideal location. Easy to book and easy to get to. The Aerobus from the airport drops you off 1 block from the apartment. The Aerobus to return picks you up nearly in front of the apartment. The lift and air conditioning were an added bonus. Very modern, great amenities and the location is in a safe neighborhood with many restaurants and grocery shops.

A special thanks to Mercedes and Jaume for having some very good local connections to get us concert tickets.
TIP: There is no Uber but "Cabify" works just as well if you need to go somewhere outside walking distance.

Barcelona was great and we would definitely return to the Livingstone apartment.
Thanks again.

Loved it

The Livingstone is a lovely, clean, modern unit in a great location. Spacious by big-city standards. There's a beautiful apartment building across the street that enhances the view. Very convenient to the Metro and to several good restaurants and other sightseeing destinations without being in a touristy area. This is a real residential neighborhood. Look online for restaurants in the Sant Antoni area to find some nearby gems. Also in the neighborhood (a 10 minute walk north on Urgell) is a terrific, festive Salsa club frequented by locals that we visited one night. We aren't great dancers, but nobody minded that we were there just to watch. JazzSi Club, also in the area, is highly recommended, but we never managed to get there early enough. Wish they had a late show!

Two suggestions for BizFlats: a couple of luggage stands would be nice so guests don't have to place their suitcases on the floor. And for us Americans, some washcloths/facecloths as part of the linen supply would be most welcome. Thanks again for a great stay!

Felt like home!

We loved our beautiful flat (it was actually the Livingstone) in Barcelona! The pricing was so reasonable that we kept the flat the whole time we were in Spain even though we left for 2 and 3 day excursions. Every time we returned to Livingstone, it felt like home, it was so much nicer than the other flats we stayed in. It was light and airy, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The only thing nicer than the apartment was the staff. Gemma and Jaume were so awesome in making us feel welcome and taken care of. If we are lucky enough to return to Barcelona one day, we would definitely want to stay there again.

Comfortable apartment in a great location! Most sights within walking distance, and, for those not, a quick train ride.

My husband and I enjoyed staying at this apartment due to its great location and "comfortable feel". The living room area allows one to de-escalate after a busy day touring. Also, we were met at the apartment by the property manager who took the time to explain the surroundings and provided us with her cell phone so we could call with any questions.

We enjoyed walking La Rambla which is within an easy walking distance from the apartment. We also enjoyed walking within the Exiample to see Gaudi's beautiful and interesting architectural designs. The area is safe. While the outside of the building does not lend charm or antiquated Spanish architecture, the inside of the apartment where we spent our "down time" was all we needed to provide the Spanish feel.

Beautiful and convenient

We were group of three friends and stayed in this beautiful apartment for 3 nights. Reservation process was very easy, and thanks to many useful information that we get from bizFlats we felt welcome even before arrived. Ali met us, helped us to find our way and answered all questions that we had. We didn't use the public transportation because it's very easy walk from flat to many tourist places of interest. The apartment was neat and clean, and we thank you for making our stay in Barcelona so enjoyable.

Great stay in gorgeus city, look no further

The property is exactly what it looks like on the photos, place is clean, everything one needs is there. A rather comfortable bed which is a pleasant surprise.

As for the location - it is in a quite place while very convenient - it is only a walking distance to most places in Barcelona.

The host provided a multitude of extras on request too, from airport transfers to parkings and coffee machines.

Great stay, would recommend it to anyone and am going to rent it again next time I'm over in the city

Memorable

Livingstone and all at BizFlats exceeded our expectations. From my initial correspondence to when we left it was a wonderful experience.

The location is super. Near to shops, restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries and transportation. Livingstone provided all we wanted and we looked forward to coming home each evening. We had a lovely chat one evening with Jaume as he brought over a new iron to replace the existing one which did not work.

Each morning we went across the road for fresh croissants for breakfast. Our six year old granddaughter loved it. It is very well equipped and everything was in excellent shape , clean and maintained.

We walked a lot, spent time at the beach, boat tours, hop on hop off bus, shopping and many other experiences. There is a lovely little restaurant to the left of Livingstone that makes wonderful empanadas.

Enjoy this wonderful apartment.
